Apple Mac OS X 10.4, MS Windows While running the HP installation CD on my Dell Windows 7 PC I received a "Fatal Error During Installation" message.Later that day, I spent more than 2-1/2 hours on the phone with the same agent, who was still unable to resolve the installation error message. The HP agent was granted remote access to my computer, as they were in all future help sessions and, after more than an hour, I was told I would be called back after the agent consulted with others for help in resolving this issue. After a 20-minute download (on a cable connection), I ran the installation with the same results - Fatal Error During Installation error message, unable to scan, and unable to run the HP Solution software. On I contacted HP support by phone for help installing this product. I then attempted to install the device again, and received the same "Fatal Error During Installation" error message and was still unable to scan or run the HP Solution software.Next I went to the HP support site and downloaded the latest installation software as the site recommended. Changes made to Registry Permissions, running services, McAfee Anti Virus and Firewall settings, etc. Here is a brief history of what transpired over the next two-plus weeks:May 10 - 1-3/4 hours on the phone with HP support. I complained that the Windows 7 Aero Peek thumbnail feature no longer showed the thumbnail view of the screen opened, but instead listed a description of it. At this point I demanded that whatever HP software was installed be removed from my PC, and whatever changes made to the Registry, etc. Same Fatal Error During Installation error message, unable to scan, and unable to run the HP Solution software. After waiting over a week with no word from HP I called on May 24 and was told I would be called the next day with a "fix". He told me when a supervisor called me the next day, the changes would be removed and Remote Access uninstalled. He then told me that HP did not have access to their Remote Access Server as they were in the process of upgrading to a newer version. (I had e-mailed Best Buy of my problems after receiving an e-mail from them inquiring as to my satisfaction with my recent purchase, and was reminded of their return policy). The agent began to instruct me as to how to deactivate Remote Access, and I stopped him requesting that the changes HP made be undone first. I also demanded some compensation from HP for my time (5 days and over 8-1/2 hours on the phone) and told the agent that I would be returning the printer to Best Buy, as I was still within the 30-day return policy. Also, Consumer Reports gave it a "recommended" status (June 2010 P. One of the reasons I purchased this printer was the good review it received in PCWorld (March 2010 P.54) and it having been ranked number 44 in the "PCWorld Best Products of the Year" (December 2009 P.79). I found this to be the cause through a Google search. I was able to restore the Aero Peek thumbnail feature myself by deleting a "mirror driver" that the HP installation program installed for use with the scanner functions. As you can see from this review, HP support is terrible. He said he would make note of my demand for compensation and that the Registry and other changes be undone and that I was returning the printer to Best Buy.HP third-level support has never contacted me, nor have I heard anything further from anyone at HP regarding compensation for all the time I spent on the phone with HP support. I haven't tested it yet for high-quality photo printing.Outbound faxing was simple - the supplied driver works well. Noise (probably from the calibration process) could be an issue in a quiet home enviroment, although I didn't find it objectionable.Print quality was quite good for text, and acceptable for plain-paper photograph printing. First page print time is somewhat slow, particularly if the printer is coming out of the sleep state. The printer also joined an unprotected wireless network easily I"m not planning to use the wireless functionality at this point, so I haven't tested the printed with a more realistic protected network.Print speed for text & mixed-text and graphics was good. The setup wizard for the installation was well-executed. The default settings (DHCP) let the printer join my wired network and finished the installation process of the HP software without incident. HP support tried for 3 hours to help and finally blamed my hardware manufacturer. The HP Software would not install due to a dll problem. It took me several days to install on a Windows Vista Machine. I thought the HP would be an improvement. The Web-based configuration option provides a simple way of tweaking settings.I bought this HP printer to replace a Canon which failed after 7 years of hard use. To making sharing a voice line with fax realistic.I've just finished the supplied ink cartridges - no comments on ink usage with the XL catridges.I didn't experience the setup/installation problems that some other users have reported, but my initial setup was done with wired ethernet and probably bypassed some wireless setup issues. It did warn me that the ink supply was low, but that was it. This failure occurred before I got a software warning to change the cartridge. When the black ink cartridge ran out of ink, it filled the printhead with black overflow. The support staff should have been able to identify this problem based on clues from other users in the HP support forum.2. Scanning is difficult over a wireless connection. I have made the configuration change, but another printer failure has prevented me from testing its effectiveness.4. After a significant search of the HP Forum, I found a potential solution provided by a forum moderator in response to many complaints. The printer sporadically fails to print the last half of the last line of a document. If this is required at every cartridge change, I'll junk this printer for sure.3. In my 7 years with my old Canon printer, I never had to clean the print head. The OS X 10.6 instructions are on HP's website. Boy, do I ever miss it.Once I realized that the OS X 10.6 set up instructions were probably written by a PC person and were therefore confusing and frustrating, I figured out the setup and it was pretty easy. Documents simply disappear. On the plus side, the print quality is almost as good as that which I got from my old Canon. On occasion (particularly after trying to scan), printing from the computer fails without any warning or error message.
